Alston Elliot (AE) is a leading provider of graphics and data solutions to the sports broadcast market. It has been established for 25 years basing its head office in Hemel Hempstead in the UK with subsidiary offices in India, South Africa and Australia. The business works for many of the world’s leading sports broadcasters and governing bodies on events as large as the Cricket and Rugby World Cups and supplies a vast range of services to clients using its own broadcast and IT hardware supplied in fly-away kits, installed in OB vehicles and studios as well as in a fleet of its own purpose built OB graphics vehicles in the UK.

Following recent new investment AE is seeking a CTO as the business looks to embark on the next level of growth and expand its offering to the market. This role will be paramount in enabling the company to realise its next growth objectives and requires a hands-on candidate that has at least 10 years of experience in a senior role within the broadcast technical sphere.

AE builds and supports all of its own hardware so the role spans traditional broadcast systems as well as a large amount of IT technology. It is increasingly moving into the online digital sphere so experience in this area will also be of benefit as will an understanding of broadcast over IP and remote production. A working knowledge of camera tracking systems for AR and virtual studios is also considered a bonus.

AE aims to be as innovative as possible in its offering to the market, often partnering with 3rd party innovation and technology providers to deliver solutions to its clients so this role will be fluid, challenging and often defined by the focus of particular large scale projects within the calendar year. Successful candidates will be open-minded, able to communicate effectively with management, staff and clients and be keen to learn about new technologies and apply them to the broadcast graphics and data sphere. Experience of and an ability to demonstrate client facing skills with a sound understanding of commercial factors is also desirable.

More about the role:

  • Based at AE Head Office in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire
  • Reporting directly to the Senior Management Team with a clear mandate to help define the technical strategy for the next 3-5 years
  • Managing a small but experienced team both in the UK and, remotely, in the subsidiary offices across both Broadcast Tech and IT
  • Playing an active role in the company’s R&D strategy to ensure the constant evolution of its range of services
  • Liaising directly with broadcasters and governing bodies on the technical aspects of AE’s global contract portfolio
  • Scoping and planning new projects with other key departments at AE
  • Sourcing, building, installing and testing equipment at their head offices and on-site at both OBs and studios
  • Managing the ongoing support, fault finding and maintenance of the company's substantial global inventory of broadcast and IT equipment
  • Budgeting, planning and purchasing of broadcast and IT hardware
  • Providing guidance and assistance on technical training plans for AE operational and projects teams
  • Attending trade shows and industry events where required
  • Travelling to events and subsidiary offices overseas when require
